Painting Stories: The Experiences That Inspire My Artwork

Picture
A few years ago I caught the travel bug. It has been the spark that has ignited the flames of my life over the last decade. I've traveled eastern and western Europe, the Mediterranean, the United States, the Caribbean, Central America, and Canada. Many of these journeys have been alone living out of the back of my pickup truck sleeping under the stars. Traveling solo as a female has been one of the most rewarding, eye opening, humbling, and confidence building parts of my life. I've spent the last two years colliding my love of art as an educator as well as an artist with my traveling experiences to create a body of work that tell my stories in a visual way. In these posts, I share the written experiences along with the artwork. I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures!

I'm about to become a full-time traveling artist on the road!

We did a thing!  We bought a very small travel trailer, the Rockwood Geo Pro 15TB, and are planning on hitting the road full time in September after the Colorado festival season!

I've always been the most happy traveling from place to place. I honestly don't know how to stay put and am at heart a drifter. My husband is the same. So this year after some family illness, a shift in the political climate, living in an extremely expensive place, and burn out at my job as a high school art teacher, we decided to rip that band-aid off and hit the road full time.

We are in our 40s. The time is now while we are young and able to enjoy an active lifestyle traveling.

We've enjoyed Colorado very much. I've been able to establish myself as a festival artist here, made amazing friends and business connections, had the opportunity to teach some amazing students, but we realize that the front range is not for us. We can see the mountains, but they are so far away!  Buying a travel trailer will allow us to be  in the heart of the landscapes that inspire my artwork.

While we are on the road, I plan on making smaller work in the 11 x 14 to 20 x 20 inch range. I'll save the larger paintings for extended stays in different locations. I'll need to lean heavily into social media (which admittedly I'm not a huge fan of) to promote my work as we move around. I'd like to do some festivals along the way, but part of the RV experience is not always having a set schedule. I'm trying to let the universe provide opportunities for me as an artist as they have in the past when I've been on the road.

Our plan is to start out in Yosemite in late September and then move our way down the High Sierras with a trip to San Francisco and Big Sur. Then we will make our way east through Arizona and hopefully end up in Florida for a few months with the snowbirds. I'm very excited about spending time in the desert this winter. It's been awhile since I've completed desert paintings. It will be nice to revisit that theme.  I'd like to explore the amazing culture of Tucson and Bigsby, Arizona. So vibrant!

I'll be blogging here about my experience as a traveling artist! So stay tuned for info, experiences, and artwork!
